Struggling Boys & Young Men
Why am I so concerned? Watching a lot of YouTubes and reviewing a number of books published in the last couple of years. Not only do the reports point out an ongoing issue with inadequate mental health services in general, and specifically to early intervention of boys under 25, and men 25-45, a large segment of the Oregonian's who die by suicide don't appear having been attended to in a way that actually reaches them and once reached move them from "hot" (a high serious intent to die by suicide) to a "warm" spot making a conscious effort to work on resilience. The final chart and accompanying YouTubes (http://www.ZeroAttempts.org/struggling.html gives a pretty solid view of where young American boys and men are heading in our culture. There are a number of books on these subjects and a good one to start with is Richard V. Reeves "Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to do about it." With colleges soon to be graduating two women for every man, marriages down, divorces up and almost half of the women who are having children today raising them without the natal father (vs 9% in 1960 to 24% in 2022), no wonder Oregon boys 19-24 ranked 39.4 deaths by suicide/100k.
